No way, blue jay, and never again. That's the vow Linney Van Horn has made regarding single dads and their adorable children. After all, that's why she's tucked tail and hauled herself and her beloved Arabian horse clear across the country from New Jersey to the small town of Venture, Colorado. To mend her bruised heart - and ego - and start over.
However, the good Lord has a different "do-over" in mind for Linney. She finds herself living next door to Stonewall "Stone" Wheeler, the frustratingly stubborn, but oh, so ruggedly hand-some farrier, and his seven-year-old son, Beau.
A widower, Stone has buried himself in his work to avoid the grief of losing his wife. Determined to grow his horse-shoeing business and raise his child, falling in love is the last thing on his mind. Until an equally stubborn - but pretty as a daisy - teacher moves into the cottage besides his, and charms both him and his son.
Divine intervention. Yup, it's a beautiful thing.
It's going to take one adorable little boy, a pair of spirited horses, and a near-fatal accident to convince Linney and Stone a second chance at a grace-filled forever is theirs for the asking.

Okay, so as you know, I am a huge fan of Darby Karchut and I was so excited to read this. It's her romance debut, and this is also the first time she's published a non-paranormal novel. While this isn't her strongest work, it does have one of her strongest father-son relationships in it. Darby's greatest strength is probably the writing she does between fathers and sons, whether they're actually related (as in this case and Stag Lord) or whether it's more of a mentor-protege thing (her Griffin and Finn series). I love that she writes these great relationships where it's so obvious how loved these kids are.
Darby is also excellent at writing strong female characters, and Linney is probably the best example of that to date. That is a lady who knows what she wants and goes after it.
This is a sweet, simple story and is just perfect for summer. Recommended.

Stone’s Heart by Darby Karchut

My Rating 5/5 stars
My Review
It’s a long drive from the east coast to among the mountains of Colorado but Linney van Horn has made the drive and arrived at what will be her new life far, far from home and the heartbreak that drove her to the decision to leave home in the first place. It’s certainly not how she saw her life playing out but it’s the situation she finds herself in and Linney intends to make the best of everything. Her faith is in God and she is sure He won’t lead her astray.
Stone and his young son, Beau, have spent the better part of three years trying to come out of a fog of grief. Since his wife was so cruelly taken from them in a tragic car accident, it has taken everything the two have just to survive. Stone has never, not once in three years seen himself being involved with another woman until Linney shows up next door. For the first time in three long years, Stone is able to look beyond his grief and see the possibility of happiness and a bright future. Trouble is, those feelings are all kinds of uncomfortable and Linney has been clear, she wants nothing more than to be friends.
Friends?? HA!! Even Linney has a hard time convincing herself that’s all she wants with Stone. With each passing day Linney draws closer to Stone and Beau as she helps the two with their daily tasks and spends many evenings with them. They share meals, recap their day, bounce ideas off one another, and share quiet moments that are filled with genuine feelings of friendship and so much more. Though both are terribly scared of their growing feelings for the other, God has a plan for them and it’s going to take a bit of work, some true fear, and more than a little pain before Stone and Linney can be together. Hey, God never promised the path would be easy
The Bottom Line Make no mistake, I so love a down and dirty romance with loads of foul language and naughty bits, BUT the market and my are flooded with those types of reads, and sometimes I crave something different. Stone’s Heart is something different but is no less good for being so. As always, Karchut has packed her novel with very real, very likeable characters. Though Stone and Linney are fictional, their personalities, problems, and emotions are walking around in the real world which makes each totally relatable. Their actions and reactions to every situation are authentic, and the plot they have been written into is real and completely plausible. There are no stretches or leaps and every situation makes perfect sense to the overall plot and characters. Finally, there is not a single curse word nor naughty scene throughout. Now, before you scoff at no foul language and no naughty bits, know this, Stone’s Heart is a truly beautiful romance between two (three if you include Beau Bear!) people who have both been hurt before but are willing to open themselves up to love once again. From start to finish, Stone’s Heart is a well written feel good read that will more than satisfy most readers and offer a breath of fresh, clean air to those who are a bit desensitized from all the down and dirty reads that are so very prevalent.
4.5 out of 5 stars
STONE’S HEART is the first novel I have read from this author, and I thoroughly enjoyed the simplistic and sweet story.
Linney Van Horn is starting over. Leaving New Jersey with a broken heart and her Arabian horse in tow, she ends up in Venture, Colorado. Looking forward to her new teacher’s position at the local grade school, Linney rents a guest cottage on the property of a sweet older couple. What she quickly finds out is the other cottage is occupied by the local farrier and his seven-year-old son. Still hurting from her failed relationship with a man who had a young daughter, Linney is determined to keep her distance from Stonewall “Stone” Wheeler and his son.
Still dealing with the loss of his wife, Stone Wheeler has only two objectives in life, build his farrier business and take care of his growing son. Love is nowhere on the agenda. When Linney moves in next door, Stone sees her as a good friend and someone who enjoys spending time with his son. That’s it. That’s all. At least, that’s what he tries to tell himself. Soon, Stone realizes Linney has revived in him the part of his heart that he thought was long dead.
Both Linney and Stone must overcome their fears, doubts, and wounded hearts if they are going to take the leap into a relationship.
I really enjoyed STONE’S HEART. It was a pretty simplistic story, but occasionally, you just want to read a book that warms you heart instead of one that challenges your thinking with plots, subplots, red herrings, and evil people. The characters were genuine and well fleshed out. And the setting, was great for this country girl at heart. My understanding is Darby Karchut usually writes in the paranormal genre. I’m not interested in that genre, but if she releases anymore contemporary romance books, I would most likely pick them up.
More PG, I like mine with a little more of an R rating. Good story for the young girls or the horse lovers
